n a nutshell, articulation is basically tonguing a note on the saxophone. There is stopping the airflow and continuing the airflow. This is tonguing a note on the saxophone with the airflow interrupted. You hear the air stop. This is articulating or tonguing the note with the airflow continued, where you're actually stopping the reed with your tongue about here, without stopping the airflow. You can hear the air continue but the note is starting and stopping because I'm controlling the reed not the air.

Hey, this is Troy Roberts. Today we're going to talk about saxophone intonation and how to play in tune. This is an alto I'm using. The best thing to do in the initial stages of intonation training is to get yourself a tuner. In this case, I've got a little app on my iPhone. It is really accurate, actually. It is pretty sensitive. I'll give you an example. Playing long notes, you should do this with all long tone exercises, just chuck the tuner in front of you, and hold it as long as you can in tune, and, of course, move through the horn this way.
  • What Is Embouchure?

the best way to explain embouchure is as a way to place your mouth around the mouthpiece and the reed to enable the most free vibration of the reed. It's essentially the reed vibrating is what makes the sound on the saxophone. The best starting point for a single embouchure is teeth on top of the mouthpiece, and the bottom of your mouth not really biting against your lip, but a bit of lip between the teeth and the reed, like that. Should be set just around where the reed departs from the mouthpiece. That's probably the best place to place your embouchure.

Your second finger is going to go on the A key, which is right here. In between that we have a little B flat bus key. The third finger is going to go on the G key, which is right above this little finger stack, here. The little finger controls this stack of keys, here. On the right hand, the first finger goes on the F key, second finger goes on the E key, and the third finger goes on the D key. Your little finger on your right hand controls these keys down here, which are the E flat and the low C.

  • How to Clean a Sax Mouthpiece
    By: jacksmith
    FREE 0
It's important that after every performance or practice session that you remove the reed from the mouth piece, and it's going to be moist from condensation and saliva. You just give it a little dry, possibly a rinse under tap. Just wipe it dry unless you're storing the reed wet in sugar-free mouthwash or water, whatever people use. Keep the reed dry, and put it back in its case.
